Need health insurance for pre existing conditions in South Carolina? There is a new federal health insurance option for residents of South Carolina that are currently uninsured, have a medical condition and have been denied health insurance.
In South Carolina during 2010, roughly 18% of the population or 809,439 individuals were uninsured. This was higher than the national average of 16%. Unfortunately, many of these South Carolina residents were unable to get health insurance because of pre existing medical conditions.
In order to reduce the number of uninsured individuals in the United States, the new healthcare law established the Pre Existing Conditions Insurance Program. This government health plan is specifically designed for uninsured individuals that cannot obtain individual medical health insurance because they have a pre existing condition.
The Affordable Act required each state to establish its own pre existing condition medical insurance program or have the federal government administer it for them. South Carolina elected to have the federal government administer its Pre Existing Conditions Insurance Plan and enrollment applications were first accepted on August 1, 2010.
As of December 31, 2011, 948 residents had enrolled in South Carolina’s health insurance for pre existing conditions program. While this represents only .117% of the total uninsured South Carolina, many individuals are still learning about the health plan.
